In September 2008, I packed my bags, said my goodbyes to family and friends and set off on a year-long adventure. Sunnier climes and a beachside location awaited me at the other end, and as my taxi tootled along the M25 onto the M23, with Gatwick Airport in sight, I was a bundle of nerves.
